Stakeholder Organisations

A number of stakeholders are contributing to the SAF-ADAPT project:

National Stakeholders


Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) – Climate Change and Air Quality Directorate

This Directorate serves on the project steering committee; facilitates interactions with other National Departments; participates in the cogeneration of research topics and identification of research sites and offers support with identifying critical capacity needs for adaptation practice and implementation, linked to DEFF’s skills gaps and priorities.

South African National Biodiversity Initiative

The mandate of SANBI as a National Implementing Agency is to work with partners to design and implement approved Adaptation Fund and GCF projects, which have concrete, on-the-ground benefits that will help communities deal with the fallout of climate change. SANBI serves on the SAF-ADAPT project steering committee; facilitates interactions with other National Departments; participates in the co-generation of research topics (including possible case studies linked to Adaptation Fund projects) and helps to identify research sites and support with identifying critical capacity needs for adaptation practice and implementation, linked to SANBI’s skills gaps and priorities.

Gender-CC

GenderCC Southern Africa – Women for Climate Justice is a nongovernmental organisation registered in South Africa in 2010 that is working with women, gender activists, civil society organisations, and gender experts from the Southern African region working for women’s rights, gender equality and climate justice. Gender-CC works with this project to leverage synergies for capacity building and networking that arise from their project: Building resilience and reducing vulnerability of smallholder farmers by focusing on mango farming enterprises, water and ecosystem
based services to reduce negative impacts of climate change.

Western Cape


GreenCape

GreenCape is a non-profit organisation that drives the widespread adoption of economically viable green economy solutions from the Western Cape. They work with businesses, investors, academia and government to help unlock the investment and employment potential of green technologies and services, and to support a transition to a resilient green economy.

Climate Change Adaptation/Resilience, Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Western Cape Government

The Climate Change Directorate coordinates the provincial response to climate change. Its internal approach is to integrate adaptation (resilience) and mitigation (low carbon) measures into the social and economic developmental service delivery goals of the Western Cape Government.

Environmental Management Department, Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate, City of Cape Town

This directorate implements environmental strategy and policy and embeds sustainability principles throughout the city. This includes the implementation of the city’s climate change policy, resource conservation and efficiency management, sustainable livelihoods, environmental reporting, the planning and coordination of climate change adaptation and the coordination of a natural open space system for Cape Town. They also champion a business management approach for the department which includes overseeing partnerships and coordinating and implementing key city projects.

Environmental Monitoring Group (EMG)

EMG is an NGO that works with other civil-society organisations to try to understand the pressures that climate change adds to an already challenging development paradigm, and to promote sustainable solutions.

Eastern Cape


Provincial Disaster Management Centre – Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre under the umbrella of the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs was established to implement a policy framework for disaster management and to provide services such as to (1) Raise awareness among line departments and municipalities through the dissemination of best practice case studies highlighting the benefits and effectiveness of the risk reduction measures with respect to the core business and services. Municipalities will cascade information to communities. (2) Expand capacity in extension support to address climate related risks, especially to small scale farmers, incorporating climate smart, ecosystem-based approaches (3) Strengthen sustainable rangeland farming through biome-specific Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) measures as well as appropriate incentives and enablers.

Eastern Cape Department: Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism

The vision of the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) is of a province where economic growth and sound environmental management underpin sustainable development. Its main strategic goal is innovation for sustainable development, with the strategic objectives being to improve organisational performance, local economic participation, emission reduction, carbon reduction and green economy initiatives, and to secure the provincial conservation status. Specifically the environmental sector oversees the 5 sub-programmes namely,(1)Environmental policy, planning and coordination (2) Compliance & enforcement (3) environmental quality management (3) Biodiversity management (4) Environmental empowerment services).

Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR)

Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) to incorporate interventions focusing on developing agricultural. The core function of the Department is to facilitate agricultural production
through the provision of technical support to farmers and community-based initiatives and the creation of a conducive environment for increased investment in agriculture.

Limpopo


Disaster Management Center, Vhembe District Municipality

Support with the identification of particularly vulnerable rural communities to climate change impacts therefore assistance with identification of research study areas.

Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Limpopo

Support communities in green economy initiatives that target local production and consumption, efficient use of energy and water as well as care of natural and other resources.

AWARD – Association for Water and Rural Development

Outreach and rural development initiatives. AWARD has implemented a number of projects aimed at building resilience. These are broadly clustered around the themes of Water, Land, Climate Change with an overarching focus on Capacity Development through systemic, social learning.

Limpopo Department: Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs

Inputs with regards to human settlement planning and building design for climate change.

Belgium


The Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities (VVSG)

The VVSG is active in South Africa through at least 6 partnerships with South African towns and cities and will be approached for collaborative actions.

The Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance (VVOB)

The VVOB has a program for equitable and sustainable education in South Africa. Its activities are mainly oriented towards secondary education, but VVOB can play in important role in awareness raising for climate change adaptation.
